jan 1, 1439 - dishbinder
Description:
Found in a by-name and minor place-name. The meaning is not certain although dishes were being ‘turned’ in Sowerby at that time. 1331 John le Dishbinder, Sowerby (YRS109/183); 1339 William Disshebinder, Sowerby (WCR12/200). Smith suggested that the Halifax field-name Dyshbyndersherde, noted in 1439, was ‘one who repairs dishes’, presumably with ‘yard’ as the suffix (PNWR3/109). See dish-thrower.
