Description:
Dignity, humanity, honour, credit. John Alayn of Ossett wrote his will in 1509 clearly expressing his hope that family members would behave decently to one another: And father, if my wif be with an other childe ye must mende her sumwhate ... and for Gode’s sake rule all wisely as I have done & ye shall have moch menske thereof (SS79/3). It survived as ‘mense’ in the West Riding.
