jan 1, 1543 - bed and back
Description:
This phrase occurs twice in deeds for Barkisland. 1502 the seyd Nicolas is agreyd to aray hys doghter sufficiently in bed and bak; 1543 at the sayde tyme of weddyng honestly arrayed of bedde and bakke as besemeth (YRS39/15,18). The editor commented on earlier examples in the Cursor Mundi (1300) and Wyclif’s Sermons (c.1375) but offered no meaning.
