One example noted, in the ordinances of York’s shoemakers. <i>c</i>.1424 <i>Item pro xij paribus de quarteredware or crested hottes xd ob</i>. (SS120/194). The meaning is uncertain but in the same list are <i>xij paribus de syngleware vijd ob</i>. so they may have been shoes made from four pieces of leather.
