The essoiner was a person who stood in for an absentee 1285 Simon le Essoniour, Shepley (YRS23/45); 1386-7 Roger Coverdale, essoingour, Nunthorpe (YRS69/47); 1424 Johannem de Suttbiry, essonyer, Calverley (Th6/241).
