jan 1, 1422 - egeoves
Description:
An unusual word, noted in an early bridge contract 1422 thre arches, and also with v coursees of egeoves lik and acordande to the same thiknes of egeoves as Barnacastelle brigge is of, Catterick (NRQS3/34). This contract is well known and has been much discussed. Several meanings have been suggested for egeoves and the most convincing argument is that it is a variant spelling of ‘ogive’ a technical term for the groynes or ribs of a vault. It may have been used in this case for the ribs of the arch.
