nov 10, 1918 - Council of People's Representatives formed
Description:
Ebert suspended the old Reichstag and formed the Council of People's Representatives from 6 moderate politicians. This Council would be the government until a new constitution was agreed on.
He also made an agreement with the army that they would work together to keep the communists out in return for all officers keeping their positions.
Over the next nine months, Ebert arranged that:
- all civil servants would keep their positions in return for keeping the state running
- all land used by businesses would not be confiscated in order to keep the economy running
- trade unions would support the new government in return for the new Republic achieving an 8-hour working day
Germany was on the edge of anarchy, but Ebert maintained control long enough to agree on the new constitution.
