Description:

In early 1868, anti government forces took over the shogun's palace, and the 15 year old emperor issued a decree establishing a new government. There was little support for the old regime, and in 1868 the revolutionaries forced the government army to surrender, ending the Tokugawa rule.

The new emperor took the reign name Meiji ("Enlightened Rule").
