With the allied forces needing help during the war, General Eisenhower launched operation overlord on the beaches of Normandy in France. On June 6th, 1944 the US moved in on the beaches of Normandy and were immediately met with heavy German resistance, some 156,000 allied forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest military invasions in history and is credited with being the start of the end of the war in Europe.
