sep 17, 1978 - Camp David Accords

Description:

The president of the USA, Jimmy Carter, had told Sadat that if Egypt made peace with Israel, the USA would give it aid. Carter was very religious, wanting world peace. He accepted the Israeli and Palestinian sides of the argument.

He invited Sadat and Begin to the US presidential retreat, Camp David. Talks were continued in a safe, private and informal atmosphere. Carter was willing to be the intermediary between Sadat and Begin.

Positives of the Camp David Accords:
- Israeli-Egyptian peace; trade through the Suez Canal and Strait of Tiran
- Both countries received USA aid
- The West Bank and Gaza would have a government rather than military occupation
- Israel, Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinians would all be consulted in the future
- Israel would not have bases in the Sinai so warmongering would be reduced

Negatives of the Camp David Accords:
- both the USA and USSR were now involved in Egypt
- 'legitimate rights' of the Palestinians were unclear
- Palestinians were not consulted
- No clear decision on Jerusalem and the Golan Heights
