jul 1, 1971 - PLO expelled from Jordan

Description:

By 1970, half of Jordan's population was Palestinian, and they saw Arafat as their leader. There were 20000 Fatah fighters in Jordan, and it seemed that a state within a state was emerging.

There were rumours that the PLO was planning to overthrow King Hussein. There was already tension between the PLO and King Hussein because of Israel's reprisals on Jordan for Fatah activity.

Therefore, King Hussein expelled the PLO leadership and thousands of Palestinian fighters. They fled to Lebanon, and the PLO set up a new base in Lebanon's capital, Beirut.
