Events:
-Harald Hardrada and Tostig's forces arrived in the north in September and they defeated Edwin and Morcar at the Battle of Fulford Gate.

Reasons for Outcome:
-Edwin and Morcar were outnumbered.
-Hardrada's soldiers were hardened veterans and used clever strategies.
-Edwin and Morcar's troops were in front of marshland and so had nowhere to retreat.

Aftermath:
-Hardrada and Tostig exchanged hostages with York which had surrendered.
-They met at Stamford Bridge with the intention of gaining more.
