jan 1, 1959 - Fatah founded
Description:
Fatah was a terrorist/freedom fighting organisation founded by Yasser Arafat, the Egyptian son of a Palestinian merchant, who had fought against Israel in the 1948-49 War and been expelled from Egypt after the Suez Crisis.
Fatah's aim was to replace Israel with one state, Palestine, for Arabs and Jews. It would do this with an armed Palestinian struggle, not relying on other Arab states to solve the problem.
Fatah was funded and armed by Syria and ran training camps for Fatah guerillas in Syria. Egypt supported Fatah but could not give it land in the Gaza Strip due to UN peacekeeping.
Fatah grew more popular amongst Palestinians but made a number of unsuccessful raids leading to Israeli retaliations on the countries which Fatah operated out of. For this reason, Jordan and Lebanon did not openly support Fatah.
