apr 18, 1954 - Nasser comes to power
Description:
Nasser was slowly taking over control of Egyptian politics. He had already held various roles of importance within government, but now he held down the position of Prime Minister and gradually the position of President, which he gained fully in 1956.
Nasser had been a leading figure in the coup against King Farouk, and was held as a hero. He came from humble beginnings (his father was a postman) but he was very ambitious. He wanted independence from Britain, which still held some control over Egypt, and to improve the lives of ordinary Egyptians.
He was also held as a champion of Arab Nationalism and it was hoped that he would destroy Israel - some saw him as the future leader of a united Arab state.
