On this day, Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for refusing to give up her seat to a white man. Not only was this a huge moment in the civil rights movement, as it was a huge spark in the movement and encouraged other protests and rallies all throughout the South, it also was a big moment for women. The fact that Rosa was black was a huge part of why it was such a big deal, but also the fact that she was a woman was of great importance. Not only did this act give hope to African-Americans all over the country, but also let women know that they could make a difference as well. Women began questioning their traditional roles as housewives and followers and wanted to take action themselves, as outlined in the famous book, Feminine Mystique written a few years later.
