jun 6, 1944 - Operation Overlord / D-Day

Description:

This operation was the largest seaborne invasion in history and it worked to free northwestern Europe from Germany’s control and would lead up to the Allied victory. Planning for the operation began in 1943 and after a couple of setbacks in time the initial landing took place on June 6, 1944, preceded by a large air attack. The coast was divided into 5 sectors, Utah, Omaha, Juno, Gold, and Sword, which were areas of attack. The first day they did not achieve any of their goals, but as the months went on, the Allies got a hold on the area and moved forward. There were about 10,000 Allied casualties and an estimated 4,000-9,000 German casualties.
