Description:

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was a joint resolution passed by the United States congress in august of 1964. This was in a response to a small naval incident in the gulf of tonkin in vietnam. It later was found out that the whole naval ordel in the gulf really wasn’t a huge thing but the US wanted to pounce on it to help stop south vietnam from spreading communism through the whole country. It gave President Lyndon B. Johnson the authority by congress to declare that US military forces should be present in vietnam without a formal declaration of war from congress.
