Malcolm X was a significant leader in the push for African American rights. He was perhaps more extreme and less nonviolent than MLK, as he was an African American nationalist who believed that African Americans must defend their rights by “any means necessary”. After making a pilgrimage to the Mecca, Malcolm X refined his philosophy to be less violent, and he started the Organization of Afro-American Unity. He was assassinated on February 21st, 1965 by members of the Nation of Islam while in the Audubon Ballroom in New York City.
