On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor. They destroyed or damaged over 20 vessels, 8 of which were battleships, and damaged over 300 airplanes. Most devastatingly, over 2,000 Americans died in the attack, with over 1,000 more being wounded. The devastation and damage caused by Pearl Harbor led the U.S. to declaring war on Japan the next day.
