may 10, 1940 - Blitzkrieg May 10, 1940
Description:
The peacefulness of the 'Phony War' was short lived. In the months after the peace, Hitler took over Norway and Denmark on April 9 and then came for the Netherlands and Belgium. On May 10, the Germans unleashed their Blitzkrieg against them, and the troops fled. The French and the British came to the rescue, but they were pushed back. The Germans cut through the Maginot Line and slashed through France and Luxembourg to get to the English Channel on May 21. After a high command called a halt to the advance north, the Germans retreated and entered Paris. On June 22, France was forced to sign an armistice with Germany, leaving Britain to fight alone. This event is important because it led to France signing an armistice and allowing Germany to keep forging forward with their plans and creating alliances along the way.
