During the 1970's and 1980's, people were unhappy with the Soviet government for its failure to help with economic and social struggles. Though Gorbachev tried to help, it was too little, too late. Faced with numerous protests and revolutions, Gorbachev resigned as leader of the USSR on December 26, 1991, thus causing the Soviet Union to collapse.Added to timeline:
