After Japan's surrender in World War II, Korea was split into North Korea, which supported communism, and South Korea, which was non-Communist. On June 25, 1950, North Koreans invaded South Korea with the intentions of uniting Korea under communist rule. Although the war ended in 1953, the power struggle between North and South Korea continues to this day.
