oct 16, 1916 - STORY EVENT #7 -Birth Control
Description:
On October 16th, in 1916 activist and suffragist Margaret Sanger created the first birth control clinic in New York. Shortly after the clinic opened, she was arrested, however she eventually payed $500 and was bailed out. The creation of the first birth control clinic was revolutionary because it sparked the debate about a woman's choice about her own body, and whether she should be able to control what she does with it. Because of Margaret Sanger, millions of women have been able to choose whether they want to have a baby, or to choose another option because whether they feel they cannot provide for it. After the creation of this clinic, women were ensured the right of their bodies, however they STILL could not vote. Suffragists had been fighting for years for progress with voting, but it was not yet achieved. Not until the 19th amendment did women finally legally achieve the ensured right to vote (Next event - 192o 19th amendment)
