feb 25, 1825 - Robert Owen explains his plans for New Harmony to Congress

Description:

In 1824, Robert Owen, a British factory owner, purchased the Harmony community in Indiana and renamed it New Harmony. Owen planned on making his newly acquired 20,000 acres and 200 buildings into a "new moral world", which would champion women's rights and education. While the actual utopian community was short lived, the ideas that it preached went on to inspire other reform movements.
