The American Temperance society was established in Boston, Massachusetts to promote the belief that the consumption of alcohol was immoral. The efforts of The American Temperance society were directed both towards alcoholics and people who occasionally drank. The efforts of the Temperance Movement and this society were largely successful because by 1840, the consumption of alcohol per person had decreased more than 50% from the decade earlier.Added to timeline:
