jun 28, 1969 - Stonewall Riots June 28, 1969 - June 3, 1969
Description:
On June 28, 1969, New York City police raided a gay club, the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York City. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as the police hauled out people from the bar. The 1960s were not a very welcoming era for LGBT Americans. There were even laws that made solicitation of homosexual relations illegal in NYC. The gay bars were a refuge where they could express themselves freely and socialize without worry. The raid by the police officers sparked a six-day protest of violent clashes. The Stonewall Riots are seen as the beginning of the Gay and Lesbian Rights Movement.
