Compulsory purchase powers are provided to enable acquiring authorities to compulsorily purchase land to carry out a function which Parliament has decided is in the public interest.
The construction of the Westway began with an Act of Parliament. This meant that the homes that needed to make way could be compulsorily purchased with Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) and demolished.
