Description:
The four summit meetings had failed, but Khrushchev could not risk a nuclear war by invading West Berlin, so instead, the Berlin wall was built. On the 12th August 1961, East German troops erected a barbed wire fence around the city. The fence eventually became a heavily guarded wall.Added to timeline:
