jan 1, 1440 - Printing press
The printing press was invented by Gutenberg in 1440 and there were hundreds around Europe by 1500 (this is why its considered a renaissance invention). At this time [medieval period], the only books made were hand-written by monks.
This meat a lot of things:
- There weren't many books around
- The church had total control over what books were written
- Most people couldn't read
