The living conditions in the West and East side of Berlin were different. In the West part they had security compared to the East were they were poor and many people (especially highly educated) fled to the other side. Therefore the USSR built a wall around the West part of Berlin. The Berlin Wall became a physical symbol for Iron Curtain.Added to timeline:
