mar 26, 1953 - Polio Vaccine March 26, 1953

Description:

On March 26, 1953, Dr. Jonas Salk announced that he had successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis, the virus that causes polio. Dr. Salk was celebrated as the great doctor-benefactor of his time for promising to eventually eradicate the disease, which mainly affected children. In the first decade of the 20th century, treatments were limited to quarantine and the infamous "iron lung," a metal coffin-like contraption that aided respiration. Salk was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.
