Description:
The space race was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union for technological dominance. The competition between the U.S .and the Soviet Union had always been political, but in 1957, they were looking to compete in space. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made object to be place into the earth's orbit. Sputnik launched the space race. It is safe to say that the United States won the space race by landing the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong. The Space Race was officially over in July of 1975 when the first US-Soviet joint mission occurred with the Apollo-Soyez project.
