In May 1945, Korea was divided into two countries at the 38th parallel. Russia controlled North Korea, and the U.S. controlled South Korea. On March 12, 1947, Truman gave his speech, which is known as the Truman Doctrine. On June 25, 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea with permission from Russia. They went as far as Seoul. South Korea did not have a strong enough army to stop them. On June 25, 1950, President Syngman Rhee started the Summer of Terror and ordered over 100, 000 people to be killed. On June 27, 1950, the United States entered the Korean War. By October 20, 1950, the United States reached the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang. On November 24, 1950, the United Nations forces launched the "Home by Christmas" offensive. On July 27, 1953, North Korea and South Korea agreed to a truce. In April 1954, representatives from the United States and China met in Geneva to talk about uniting Korea. Talks at Geneva failed to unite Korea.
