in July 1954 at a conference in Geneva, world powers decided to divide Vietnam along the 17th parallel. Ho Chi Minh controlled the North, and Ngo Dinh Diem controlled the South and its anticommunist government that was supported by the United States. On September 10, 1960, Le Duan replaced Ho Chi Minh as First Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party in Hanoi. On November 8, 1960, John F. Kennedy became President of the U.S. Johnson was vice president. On December 20, 1960, the VIet Cong was formed by Southern revolutionaries who were backed by the North Vietnamese. On November 1-2, 1963, President Diem and his brother were murdered during a coup by dissident generals of the South Vietnamese Army. In the United States, Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, and Johnson was made President. After the Gulf of Tunkin incident, Johnson sought congressional approval for direct U.S. involvement in Vietnam. On November 14-18, 1965 in the Ia Drang Valley, American troops fought their first large-scale battles against the North Vietnamese Army. On January 31, 1968, the Tet Offesnive occurred, and the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops lannch a surprise attack against targets throughout South Vietnam. November 5, 1968, Nixon was elected President and promised to end the Vietnam War. On January 27, 1973, a cease-fire agreement was reached between the U.S. and North Vietnam. On March 29, 1973, the last U.S. combat troops left South Vietnam.
