Demonstrated the belief of the colonial office+ settlers of the primitive nature of Africans- had already been phased out in 19th century in UK- but primitive people required primitive laws.

Unwritten contracts to last no more than a month, breaches of contract dealt with by civil court

Absolutely nothing which protected the worker- and Africans didn't understand the legislation whereas Europeans did- and therefore used it to punish them
