What do the Chinese Citizens may have seen as a way to restore what should be 'real Communism' by purging all elements of society with his Red Guard group was actually Mao Zedong's efforts to purge the CCP of anyone against him. He removed past-current leaders Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping and put himself in charge and pushed on the so-called 'Cultural Revolution' and put in real Communism and get rid of the Capitalists. This revolution would only end when Mao Zedong died in 1976, The Revolution essentially traumatized society and turned Mao Zedong into a god.
