Description:
In response to the Gulf of Tonkin incident, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution on August 10, 1964. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution allowed President Johnson to take any measures he believed were necessary to retaliate and to promote the maintenance of international peace and security in southeast Asia. This allowed Johnson to protect not only the United States, but also any ally such as South Vietnam, who by 1964 was in serious danger of falling to a communist insurgency.Added to timeline:
