After the United States surrendered at the Bataan Peninsula on the Philippine island of Luzon during World War II, about 75,000 Filipino and American troops were forced to march 65 miles to prison camps. These marchers made the trek in intense heat and were subjected to harsh treatment by Japanese guards. Thousands died on this five-day march due to the brutality of the captors.
