Gorbachev resigned the presidency of the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991. The Soviet Union did not exist one week later, it had been replaced by a loose alliance of former Soviet republics called the Commonwealth of Independent States. Russia's new president, Boris Yeltsin, emerged as the dominant leader in this fragmented land.
