The forerunner of the United Nations was the League of Nations. The organization was conceived under similar circumstances during the first World War and established in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles "to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security. On January 1, 1942, representatives of 26 nations at war with the Axis powers met in Washington to sign the Declaration of the United Nations that endorsed the Atlantic Charter. The nations pledged to use their full resources against the Axis and agreed not to make a separate peace. The United Nations officially came into existence on October 24 1945, when the United Nations Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories.
