Freedom Rides were bus trips throughout the American South to protest segregated bus terminals. Freedom Riders were groups of white and African American civil rights activists who participated in these rides. To combat segregation, Freedom Riders tried to use "whites-only" restrooms and lunch counters at bus stations in southern states. Most Freedom Riders were arrested by police officers and faced horrific violence from white protesters.
