In 1519, Hernan Cortes conquered the mighty Aztec empire in current day Mexico. His men were outnumbered, but he employed a bold strategy- he burned all of his ships so that his men would have two choices- fight or die, no escape. The Spanish's superior weapons(guns), and their metal armor played key roles in their victories, and so did their immune systems. They carried over European viruses that decimated native populations.
