aug 7, 1964 - Gulf of Tonkin Resolution Passes
Description:
This resolution authorized President Johnson to take necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the U.S. forces to prevent any further aggression by the Nort Vietnamese communist government. It was passed on August 7, following a supposed attack on two U.S. naval destroyers stationed off the Vietnam coast. This event launched the full-scale involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War. This also allowed Johnson to be a president during wartime without actually declaring war.
