aug 13, 1961 - Berlin Wall
Description:
On this day, East Germany began to build a barbed wire and concrete wall, separating East and West Berlin. The purpose of this wall was to keep Westerners from entering East Berlin and undermining the socialist state. The wall stood until November 9, 1989, when the head of the East German Communist Party announced that people from the German Democratic Republic could cross the border at their own leisure.
