oct 4, 1957 - Sputnik Launched
Description:
The Soviets launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite, during what is known as the "space race" between the U.S. and the Soviets. About three months later, the U.S. launched their first satellite, The Explorer, but, by then, the Soviets had already planned to launch Sputnik II. The Soviets followed with many other space firsts, such as first to orbit the moon.
