feb 5, 1937 - FDR Court Packing Scandal
Description:
On this day, Roosevelt announced his plan to expand the Supreme Court to up to 15 judges to make it more efficient. Critics claimed that he was trying to "pack" the court so that the Supreme Court judges would support his New Deal. The court had struck down many key pieces of the New Deal, including those relating to the amount of authoritative power of the executive and legislative branches. But when he introduced the Social Security Act and National Labor Standards Act, both pieces passed when two judges came to the liberal side.
