aug 1, 1744 - Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (August 1, 1744-December 18, 1829)
Description:
His contribution to the theory of evolution included Lamarckism, which states that acquired characteristics are inheritable. Basically he believed that if an organism changes during life in order to adapt to its environment, those changes are passed on to its offspring. His Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics was first presented in 1801, 58 years before Darwin's first book dealing with natural selection.
