dec 23, 1927 - "Languages of Loyalty" -- Northrop (2000)
Description:
A discussion of Soviet policy in Uzbekistan (1927-41) that revealed domestic politics (through gender norms, with the ideal 'liberated' Soviet woman as a model) as an arena for exerting state control & power, while serving as an easy way of identifying 'loyalty'. Reveals weakness or strength of Soviet nationality policy. Dual strategy of korenizatsiia and modernization were particularly hard to implement in "Soviet Muslim 'East'" because cultural norms were antithetical to ideas of modernity (esp. due to religion), particularly the paranji (floor-length garment women were expected to wear). Hujum (administrative assault) became the method of dealing with backwardness and poor progress.
