jan 1, 1915 - The first coast to coast call was made.
Alexander Graham Bell in New York and his previous lab partner, Thomas Watson in California made the first transcontinental phone call in history. Hundreds of people cheered on both ends when they heard the two communicate and this was the first real hope to the public that they would be able to one day make calls across the country too. Making a call like this was very expensive at the time however, but this was the first step to improvement and availability to the public.
