The Battle of Yorktown was a conflict between Great Britain and its thirteen colonies in North America during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). The battlefield in which the British and American Forces fought during the Battle of Yorktown was located in Yorktown, Virginia. The Battle of Yorktown ended in victory for the American colonists. On this day in 1781, General George Washington, commanding a force of 17,000 French and Continental troops, begins the siege known as the Battle of Yorktown against British General Lord Charles Cornwallis and a contingent of 9,000 British troops at Yorktown, Virginia, in the most important battle of the Revolutionary War. On October 19, 1781, the British laid down their arms and surrendered. The British army was decimated and the American Revolutionary war was virtually over.
